This book sees Jansson adopt a darker, more introspective tone compared to the earlier books that is continued in the remainder of the series. While many of the earlier Moomin books (Comet in Mooninland, Moominsummer Madness) are geared squarely at children, some of the later books are more melancholy and meditative -- those are my favorites (Moominland Midwinter and Moominpapa at Sea). 2 people found this helpful Moominland Midwinter is more melancholic and thoughtful than earlier Moomin books. It is also one of my favourite Moomin books alongside with Moominvalley in November. It is Moomintroll's story of growing up; he wakes up in the winter when rest of the family is still hibernating and feels utterly lonely in the dark, cold world. Moominland Midwinter (Swedish: Trollvinter Literally: Trollwinter) is the seventh in the series of Tove Jansson's Moomin books and the sixth novel, published in 1957. The story follows Moomintroll as he wakes up from his winter hibernation and discovers the winter season for the first time.

The Ancestor (Swedish: Förfadern) is a small furry apelike troll appearing in Moominland Midwinter and Moominvalley in November. It dwells inside the Moomin family's stove, and is thought to be an ancient ancestor of Moomintroll.
